ตัวละครยอดนิยมตลอดกาลของค่ายเกมส์ Nintendo มาริโอ้นั้นถือกำเนินในปี 1981 โดย มิยาโมโต้ ชิเงรุ ในชื่อว่า jumpman ในเกม ดองกี้คอง ซึ่งเขาต้องกระโดดหลบถังเเละลูกไฟขึ้นไปช่วยเเฟนสาว โพลีน นอกจากนี้ยังมีเกมมุดท่อต่อสู้ใน mario bros ในปี 1983 ด้วย  แต่จุดที่ถือว่าเป็นการแจ้งเกิดเลยคือเกมส์ super mario bros ในปี1985 ในเครื่อง เเฟมิคอม ด้วยรูปเเบบการเล่นที่เรียบง่ายเเละไม่ซับซ้อน มี 8 ฉากหลัก เเละ 4 ฉากย่อย รวมถึงเสียงดนตรีที่ติดหู เเละมีการต่อสู้กับ คุปป้า (bowser ใน us ) เพื่อไปช่วยเจ้าหญิงพีซ
